Frequently Asked Questions
What is a car title transfer in California?
Transferring a car title is a mandatory transaction that transfers ownership of a given vehicle from one individual to another. The certificate of title, also known as a pink slip in California, is the official document issued by the state DMV for purposes of linking the old with the new owner and signing over the vehicle ownership. If the buyer fails to complete the CA car title transfer, he or she will be unable to properly register and operate the vehicle. The seller, on the other hand, must also ensure the completion of the title transfer for cars to avoid future liability for the vehicle.
Why is my Registration Suspended?
If you have not had insurance for any period the likeliness is that your DMV registration is suspended! This is the DMV’s action towards people who do not keep their vehicles insured [note, this does not apply to vehicles that have a non-operation on file with the DMV]. Most people find out that their vehicle registration is suspended when it’s time to renew their vehicle registration or when they receive a notice of intent to suspend a letter from the DMV. Vehicle registration suspensions are directly tied to auto insurance and your vehicle and do NOT have anything to do with your driver’s license. A registration suspension usually takes 3-4 weeks to take effect. Usually, the registration suspension notice is sent to you with enough time to address the matter before the suspension kicks in and the reinstatement fee is due.
What is a California Salvage Title?
CA DMV salvage title is a legal document certifying the ownership rights over a motor vehicle that has been damaged due to an accident or other circumstances. Vehicle owners may apply for a revived salvage title when it has been previously reported as a total loss and later restored to a good operational condition by the vehicle owner. Requirements for a revived Salvage title in California are as follow:
· Complete a standard Application for Title or Registration (form REG 343).
· Provide proof of ownership (Pink Slip/Title or an Application for Salvage Certificate REG 488C)
· Provide a Verification of Vehicle (form REG 31) or CHP Certificate of Inspection (form CHP 97C)
· Submit certificates for the vehicle’s brake and light adjustment.
· Submit payment for the applicable fees.
When is a bill of sale necessary in California?
Presenting a California bill of sale form that bears the legal signature of the vehicle seller is a necessary step in certain situations. For instance, a vehicle bill of sale can be used to resolve potential issues regarding the current vehicle ownership. For instance, while a DMV bill of sale is not typically required when transferring ownership of a vehicle, you may be required to submit one if the vehicle in question was previously owned by several individuals. In such cases, you may need to prove the chain of ownership by submitting separate forms that document all previous car owners. A CA DMV bill of sale is important for other special vehicle-related transactions as well. For example, filling out a template is important when completing car registration procedures for a specially constructed vehicle or when selling a car with previous junk status.
